This is the book I wish existed when I started leading continuous improvement teams in an office environment where nearly everyone’s work required using software and databases. Companies implement Lean/Six Sigma/Continuous Improvement programs believing that will lead to operational excellence. Often teams get caught up in using problem solving tools and making changes for change’s sake and later learn their efforts had little to no impact on improving operational fitness–not all changes actually improve customer service, product quality or the bottom line. I love that the author starts with a discussion of operational excellence.

There are some pedantic books out there written by professors of theory. There are some hired-gun consultants out there that operate almost in the world of theory – meaning they have the luxury of serving up a recommended “fix” to a company and then stepping away before the fix is proven in actual application. Contrary to that, this book is the author’s real-world experience of implementing process improvement for a multinational corporation over decades – so this is more of a longitudinal study of what actually worked, not just what the author would like to believe should work. I found it a useful read.

As an effective and easily digestible read that hits all the key points to continuous improvement, the insights detailed in Process Alchemy translate seamlessly throughout the spectrum of business functions, from operations and engineering to product management, sales and marketing. Depending on your level of management experience, this book provides a variety of best practices that serve as both a timely refresher for some, and a guiding construct for many others (while offering valuable lessons for all). From the SIPOC template and Pareto principle, to brain swarming techniques and painstorming in Kano analysis, Process Alchemy reminds us to treat every transaction and business process as a foundation for improvement, while embracing mistakes with an attitude of “what did we learn today?”

Having been employed at a place undergoing significant changes in management and processes, many misunderstandings and resulting resentments could have been avoided had administrators in charge read this book first.

For any manager, or employee with a manager, who’s willing to ask, “What did we learn,” Process Alchemy provides a path to excellence in day to day operations. Process Alchemy also offers a way to successfully navigate institutional transitions that might otherwise result in loss of knowledge and team cohesiveness.

Process Alchemy is that next generation Continuous Improvement book that new practitioners, existing practitioners, or those considering a shift towards a continuous improvement management approach, should have in their daily arsenals. Ms. Topf is able to relate her excellent educational and training background, her personal lived experiences over time, and a rare and deep understanding and commitment to Kaizen, in a highly readable and relevant manner.

One theme of her book cannot be overstated. This is the role of effective communication in a successful transformation and, sadly, our tendencies to overlook its importance. Operational Excellence is the ability of an organization to build upon itself, to bring in or develop the future talent needed in leading the horizontal flow of work, and all that is required. Maribel Topf understands this and knows how to build the community that makes things work. I highly recommend this book.
